Digital pressure sensors: The heart of a smart world

Pressure is one of the most common physical quantities in industry and everyday life. Precise pressure measurements are critical for air conditioning systems, automobiles, medical devices, and the oil and gas industry. Traditionally,      mechanical  manometers    and barometers were  used to measure pressure. However, advances in electronics and digital technology have led to the emergence of a new generation of measuring devices:     digital pressure sensors     . These sensors combine high accuracy, fast response, and the ability to communicate with modern control systems.

What is a pressure sensor?

A pressure sensor is a device that measures the force acting on a unit area of a liquid (or gas) and converts it into a readable signal (analog or digital). Digital pressure sensors output pressure data directly in digital format and typically feature     an internal display, automatic calibration, and an industry-standard output     .

The difference between digital pressure sensors and analog sensors

  • Data output     : Analog sensors output voltage or current, while digital sensors provide pressure values in digital form (e.g. I2C, SPI and CAN protocols).

  • Accuracy and stability     : Digital sensors have higher accuracy due to internal compensation and software algorithms.

  • Additional features     : Ability to set up alarms, data storage and connection to industrial networks.

  • Power consumption     : Some digital models are optimized for wearables and IoT devices.

Types of digital pressure sensors

1.     Absolute pressure sensor:
Measures pressure relative to absolute vacuum. Applications: Meteorology, altimetry, and aerospace engineering.

2. Pressure sensors   measure
pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. Applications: car tires, hydraulic systems.

3.     Differential pressure sensor:
Calculates the pressure difference between two points. Applications: filter systems, measuring fluid flow in pipelines.

4.    Microelectromechanical (MEMS) pressure sensors
are based on MEMS technology and are characterized by extremely small dimensions. Applications include mobile phones, wearable devices, and the Internet of Things.

How a digital pressure sensor works

Most digital pressure sensors use one of the following technologies:

  • Electrical resistivity     : The change in the electrical resistance of a material under pressure.

  • Capacitance     : The change in the capacity of a capacitor due to the change in the distance between the plates under pressure.

  • Piezoelectricity     : the generation of an electrical charge under mechanical pressure.

  • Resonance     : The change in the resonant frequency of a crystal under the influence of voltage.

The primary signal is amplified and digitized by internal circuits and then transmitted to the control system via a standard connector.

Applications of digital pressure sensors

1. Automotive industry

  • Check the engine oil pressure

  • Braking system with ABS

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

2. Medical devices

  • Ventilation units

Advantages of digital pressure sensors

  • High accuracy     : up to ±0.01% of full scale

  • Long-term stability     : no calibration required

  • Possibility of connection to industrial networks     (Modbus, CAN, Profibus)

  • Small size and low power consumption.

  • Error detection  and warning functions

  • Wireless storage and data transfer functions

Problems and limitations

  • More expensive than analogue models

  • Sensitivity to environmental conditions     such as high   temperatures   and high humidity.

  • Installation and configuration require technical knowledge.

  • Limited lifetime in corrosive or vibrating environments.

The manufacturing process of digital pressure sensors in Iran

In recent years, several Iranian high-tech companies have achieved success in the development and production of digital position pressure sensors. These products are used primarily   in   the oil and gas, automotive, and medical technology industries. While imports from Europe, the US, and East Asian countries still account for a significant market share, the shift toward localization heralds a more independent future.

The future of digital pressure sensors

With the development of the Internet     of Things (IoT),   artificial intelligence     (AI)   , and industrial automation     (Industry 4.0), digital pressure sensors will play an increasingly important role. In the near future, these sensors will not only measure pressure but     also predict faults and analyze environmental conditions thanks to integrated data processing capabilities         . Furthermore, the use of wireless technologies such as  LoRaWAN     and     5G will enable   large-scale remote pressure monitoring.

Finally

Digital pressure sensors are precise, reliable, and intelligent devices that have replaced traditional instruments and impact every aspect of our lives     .     These sensors are critical for safety in sensitive industries, from human health to security.

Despite the challenges, global trends indicate that the future lies in digital sensors that are smarter, more compact, and better connected. For Iran, developing its own technologies in this area could     be an important step toward industrial self-sufficiency and strengthening its presence in the global market.
