What is a capacitor?

Condensates     are    an important product of the oil and gas industry and have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their key role in the production of light fuels, petrochemical feedstocks, and energy exports. This clear, light liquid is a component of the hydrocarbon compounds in natural gas found in underground reservoirs, where it condenses into a gaseous state below the Earth’s surface. Therefore, it is     called    a condensate      .

1. Definition of liquefied petroleum gas

Condensate gas is a mixture of light hydrocarbons, such as pentane (C5), and heavier compounds with up to 15 carbon atoms. These compounds are separated from the gas phase and condense into a liquid at lower temperatures and pressures.

Main properties of gas condensate:

  • Transparent and almost colorless.

  • It smells like gasoline.

  • Low density (lighter than water)

  • Low flash point

  • Relatively high calorific value

In contrast to heavy crude oil, condensate contains far less sulfur and aromatic compounds,     making processing much easier and cheaper.


2. How is liquefied gas produced?

Deep underground, in gas reservoirs, a mixture of natural gas and dissolved hydrocarbons exists under high pressure and temperature. As this mixture rises to the surface, the pressure and temperature change, causing some of the dissolved hydrocarbons in the natural gas to     separate from     the gas phase and condense into droplets. This phenomenon is     called condensation.

The learning process comprises three main phases:

1. The gas contains liquefied hydrocarbons.

Gases associated with condensed petroleum typically contain high proportions of C5+.

2. Voltage drop in power lines

As the borehole descends towards the surface, the pressure gradually decreases.

3. Separation of the surfaces

In the separation plant, the condensate is separated from the natural gas and collected in storage tanks.


3. Main components of gas condensate

Condensate analysis varies depending on the tank type, but    typically includes   the following:

  • Pentanes and heptans (light compounds)

  • paraffin

  • North American Free Trade Area

  • natural gasoline

  • Small amounts of aromatic substances such as toluene and xylene.

  • Some oil fields contain very little or no sulfur.

This unique composition gives liquefied petroleum gas    a high economic value    .


4. Difference between condensate and crude oil

Although both products are derived from hydrocarbons, there are important differences between them:

After natural gas extraction, condensate can be collected in various ways:

1. Borehole head separator

At this stage, the gas, condensate, and the original brine are separated.

2. Desalination plant

This process is carried out     to remove acidic compounds such as H₂S and CO₂.

3. Stability

This is done to reduce steam pressure and improve storage safety.

4. Storage and shipping to oil refineries or for export.

After processing, the condensed oil is stored in special tanks or   exported directly     .


6. Application of gas condensate

Due to their low weight, natural gas capacitors are widely used in various industries. Their most important applications include:

1. Gasoline production

Natural gas condensates are     processed in a reforming plant and converted into high-quality gasoline.

2. Petrochemical raw materials

In the petrochemical industry , it is used to produce the following:

  • Ethylen

  • Propylen

  • aromatic substances


  • Use synthetic fuel.

3. Naphtha production

Naphtha, which is obtained from petroleum condensates, is one of the most important raw materials for the production of plastics.

4. Fuel for power plants

In some countries it is     used as a light alternative to diesel fuel  .

5. Heavy oil thinner

In Canada and Venezuela, it is used to liquefy very viscous oil  .


7. Economic importance of gas condensate

Natural gas condensate is a strategic resource for countries with large reserves. In particular, for countries like Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, the sale and processing of natural gas condensate constitutes a significant portion of their energy revenues  .

Reasons for its economic   importance:

1. High export value

Condensates are among the most expensive hydrocarbons, and their main customers are South Korea, Japan, and China.

2. Plays a crucial role in the manufacturing industry.

Condensates are important   raw materials    for many petrochemical plants and form a significant value chain.

3. Option for gasoline replacement

Due to their similar composition and with  appropriate  cleaning, they can cover part of the gasoline demand.

4. Increased profitability

The proportion of light products in condensates is significantly higher than in crude oil.


8. Problems and challenges associated with gas condensate

Despite the high value of gas condensates, their extraction and storage are     associated with certain problems:

1. High evaporation rate

Condensates are highly volatile and can release flammable gases even at room temperature. Therefore, vapor control in    tanks    and docks is of crucial importance.

2. Security risks

Due to its low flash point, it poses a fire hazard if     it escapes  and requires the use of special protective equipment.

3. Export restrictions

Selling   condensate   can sometimes be difficult due to sanctions or trade restrictions.

4. Environmental pollution due to improper management

If emissions of volatile organic compounds  (VOCs) are not controlled, they can have negative impacts on the environment.

5. Price fluctuations

Global condensate prices depend on crude oil prices and the petrochemical market.

9. Iranian gas condensates

Iran is one of the world’s largest producers of condensate, primarily due to the vast  South Pars gas field      . Many Iranian refineries, such as the refinery in Bandar Fars, use condensate as a primary feedstock.

The significance of Iranian gas condensates:

  • It also supplies     the Gulf Star refinery with raw materials and produces most of the country’s gasoline.

  • Export to Asian markets

  • Raw material supply for the petrochemical industry

10. The future of gas condensates

Since condensate has a lighter and less environmentally harmful composition than heavy oil, it can play a positive role in the transition to clean energy.

New technologies are being developed to control steam and reduce evaporation.

4. Development of gas condensate refineries

Many countries are building small but fast oil refineries that use condensate as a raw material.
